My Bullshit Detector Went off

I am pretty good at sniffing out bulshit and this story via a far left America-hating blog (Suburan Guerilla) smells like hell.

The story has a claim from an Irish lady who said she visited an Iraqi hospital recently and saw 200 kids who had terminal cancers caused by the (first) Gulf War and the American embargo (of course) prevented 2 of the needed 5 medicines from reaching these kids.

When was the Gulf War ? 14 years ago? And the kids are still alive? Yes I bet it is bullshit or just another lib stretching the facts and the numbers to fit her hate-America worldview.

I Did Not Pay My Old Parking Ticket Again

I saw this story that Obama paid some very old parking tickets dating back to his days at Harvard some 15 years ago or more. No big whup this story but I have decided to announce I have not paid the late fee on my old parking ticket again. And never will.

Here is my story and I am sticking to it. About twelve years ago, I got a parking ticket on a Friday evening in downtown Philly. The ticket was for maybe $20 and they require it be paid within eight calendar days!! or they add exorbitant late fees (Philly is run by filthy disgusting cretins). Anyway I have to go out of town the following week, get home very late on Friday and realize I have to pay the ticket by noon on Saturday. So, I race downtown on Saturday morning and get to the office at 11:55AM I swear to God and the cretin in charge has the doors locked already. So I slide my envelope with the check through the cracks between the doors and it falls at the feet of the cretin/ guard. He says we are closed, I point to my watch and say it ain't noon yet and leave.

Well sure enough they send me a late fine of about $29 which is more than the original ticket. I check my bank statement and see my check was cashed that Monday and I flip them the bird figureatively and decide they ain't getting a another cent from me. In the 12 years since then, the cretins have sent me at least 100 notices asking me to pay. And I don't even live in cretinville anymore. What a bunch of dopes.

Update- When I was on vacation once,I got a parking ticket on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. I forgot to pay it somehow -it was a rental car and the agency sent me the ticket like 2 months later. Guess what - there was no frigging late fee. Now think about that - which place would you rather visit ? Philly or Los Angeles? One is run by cretins who jack up your parking ticket with exorbitant late fees or a beautiful sunny city in Caleeeeeeeefornya.

The Stampede To Support Global Warming

I saw on Drudge a National Geographic news article where a foreign scientist said there is evidence the planet, Mars, is warming too. If true, he said that could be evidence that warming on earth is due to the sun warming. The article went on to quote two other individuals. One was referred to as a "climate scientist". Both individuals disagreed with the first scientist's theory.

Curious, I googled the "climate scientist" and found he has a masters degree (no PHD yet) and is approximately 25-26 years old. His website lists him as a research assistant! Is his somewhat limited education and brief experience typical of the "authorities" who are generally quoted by the MSM in these global warming stories? If so, it seems damn questionable. Click on the post title if you want to read his curiculum vitae. I don't make this stuff up.

And since I am fair, the second skeptical scientist is named Colin Wilson. I also googled him, he has a PHD and worked on stuff like the Mars lander thingamabob. So I would agree Wilson has bigtime credentials.

We'd Have A Better Chance If We Asked Shaq To Reject It

I read this story and burst out laughing. Apparently, an asteroid may pass near to earth in 2036 and so a group of scientists, etc are recommending the United Nations be given responsibility to plan to (I guess) blast it out of space before it could hit. I think we'd have way way more luck if we asked Shaquille O'Neal to reject it before it hits the rim (earth) and he will be about 65 or 70 years old in 2036.

The Third Way On Immigration Reform

So far the argument is between amnesty leading to cittizenship vs. sending the illegal immigrants back to the country from which they emigrated.

I support a third way. It requires we stop the bleeding and secure the borders now with fences, etc. As to those already here illegally, I recommend we allow those that are not criminals to stay and be classified and tracked as a "legal alien or pemanent resident " only after they pass a language test, etc. BUT they will never be allowed to become a citizen or vote. I do support their kids having that right of citizenship after the kids reach let's say 18 years old or have been here ten years. The strength of my plan is it does not reward people who have come here illegally and, in effect, "jumped the waiting list".

In other words, I am saying "tough luck" to those who have come here illegally- you will never have the right to vote which would essentially dilute the value of the vote of those who became citizens legally and properly.

I suspect most illegal immigrants will accept the terms of my plan- only a very small number if any will decide to leave the great old USA.

Union Of Concerned Scientists or Some Things Don't Change

I just read an obit for a highly regarded physicist. His name was Francis Low and the obit in the Philly Inquirer included this paragraph:

“He was a founding member of the Union of Concerned Scientists in 1969. He was briefly chairman of the union, but stepped down because he disagreed with members who refused to consider studying whether nuclear reactors could be made safe and reliable”.

I find this extremely interesting. The Union Of Concerned Scientists is the same group that is so certain about global warming and is the same group that often gets news coverage by accusing the Bush Admin of censoring guvmint scientists. On the other hand but with far less news coverage, several in the world of science have claimed this group stifles the dissenting opinions of scientists who are less certain about global warming. The obit suggests the Union of Concerned Scientists' history of stifling dissent may go back as far as 1969.

Could We Do This Today?

Pearl Harbor was bombed on December 7th. My father was drafted the next month and inducted into the Army on Feb 12th. That's a space of only 67 days.

Today marks about the 35th day since Congress convened for its current term. And its esteemed members are still yakking away about a non-binding resolution on Iraq. So to answer my own question, I don't think the country could do anything important in 67 days but somehow it did it way back in 1941-1942.

I am awarding a weekly award for the dumbest idea thrown out by a politician. Because there is a mayoral election this year in Philly and five Dems are running, I think I may get plenty of dumb ideas. I named the award "The CF Award" in honor of the first winner who is also a high school dropout and from the looks of his idea, I guess they don't make those GED diplomas like they used to. CF Award stands for "Crazy F'er" and is appropriate to describe the first winner, Chaka Fattah, who wants to charge people to drive their car into center city. CF's rationale is London does it and it raises lots of money and Fatah says he will use the money to fund public transportation.

You know the Democrat mantra these days is "Septa needs a dedicated funding source" by which they mean Septa needs its own new tax so the polticians don't have to stand up every year and admit that Septa's expenses are out of control and that is why its budget goes up by 10% or more every year while the number of riders goes down. Instead the politicians should ask why the public has to fork over a budget subsidy to Septa of $3 or more EVERYTIME a rider steps onto a Septa vehicle. So, Fattah looks at a city with about 7 million people and a much more comprehensive transit system and determines that Philly could do the same thing. This is another example of why I am no longer a Democrat.

Was She Called Student Body?

Here is a news story about a hooker who was working the mean streets of Cheyney University and trolling for customers among the student body (heh). I thought the cost of college was way too much for most families. Guess we have to re-visit that thinking if the kids at this college can afford hookers (and FYI - this new blogger lets you add the link in the post title above- so just click on the post title if you want to see the Inky news story).

This Is A Great Country

Look at this picture and try to tell me this is not a great country!! I will likely not vote for Senator Obama in 2008 (too inexperienced and I don't vote much for Dimmocrats anymore) but this is a great, great picture of a really nice looking family! I think this picture has the potential to rank right up there with that old photo of John-John Kennedy saluting his dead father (JFK). But of course only if Obama actually became president.

Nelson Jammer

That's what we call him at work cause he got some mail that was addressed to "Nelson Jammer". Of course, his correct name is Jameer Nelson- he had a great game last night. I am rooting for the Magic cause I know Jameer but dang they have been up and down lately. Guess cause they are young. Here is a picture - the former NCAA Player of the Year scored 31 points last night and the Magic beat San Antonio Spurs! A big win!

Remember that great line from one of Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry movies? He was asking the perp if he remembered how many bullets Eastwood had fired.

Well, the recent blast of artic cold reminds me of a time I was driving a truck for the old Evening Bulletin- I worked there for 6-7 years on and off as I meandered to my degree from old Temple University. One of my shifts was early Sunday in the wee A.M. hours. One frigid night in 1977 or 1978, it had been cold for weeks and there was ice everywhere. I drove my truck out of the plant at 32nd & Market and drove around the 30th Street Station and saw a bunch of fire and police vehilces clustered next to the river.

I stopped and asked a bystander what had happened. He told me someone jumped off the bridge and into the river (suicide attempt) but because it was so cold, the river was frozen solid and the jumper did not die but broke both his legs. And every so often I wondered if the jumper felt lucky that day?

Anna Nicole Smith Is Still A Dope

Do you know how many millions of people fight so hard day after day to stay alive? People with no money; people with few or no friends or familty to help; people with horrible, crippling diseases. But still they fight and struggle and are glad and happy to live another day.

Then I hear on the radio that this trailer park idiot has "gone through so much in the last few months" and "perhaps that is why she misued drugs which could have caused her death today at the age of 39".

And I think .. what a dope she was. A selfish dope who did not appreciate how good she had it.

Did We Make FICA "Contributions" In 1933?

Here is how the latest "economic sky is falling" story began from the AP:

WASHINGTON - Americans are saving at the lowest level since the Great Depression, and that could be a problem for the millions of baby boomers getting ready to retire. The Commerce Department reported yesterday that the nation's personal savings rate for all of 2006 was a negative 1 percent, the worst in 73 years. "..

Now open your mind, use your head and consider this. In 1933, there was no social security and so no one had FICA "contributions" deducted from their paycheck. Today, that tax is 6.2% of your paycheck PLUS your boss "contributes" another 6.2% of your paycheck to the guvmint.

Now, I don't know how you do arithmetic, but I figure this means we "contribute" 12.4% in "savings" or "FICA taxes" for every $100 we earn in a paycheck. I am self-employed so I pay the whole 12.4% myself.

It is fair to view this as a type of "enforced savings" except it goes into a big black hole. But if the AP and the Commerce Department had included these "savings or FICA contributions" in their calculation of national savings, there is no way today's savings rate is lower than it was in 1933! I suspect you would agree.

Lastly, for people who have been working for many years and making these contributuions, it is easy to feel like one of those shareholders who invested in Enron stock. I guess that makes the Congress a guvmint version of ENRON's crooked execs?

United For Peace Rally

I watched some of the rally on C-span today. The speakers consisted of a gaggle of grotesque, ugly loons. They are best described as America-haters, boomer losers, hanging on in the fringe elements of society. You would not want to have a beer with these gargoyles. They are losers, they know it and that makes them very, very angry at the rest of America.

And this picture is a file photo from the demonstrators at the Republican National Convention a few years ago. These protestors are only slightly better-looking than the hateful speakers at today's rally.

This picture is from a news story about a family that got scammed for their rent money by a "landlord" who no longer owned the house. They lost $3,000 and the bank is evicting them. The Philly district attorney won't pursuse prosecution because its policy is an econmic crime must be $50,000 or more to prosecute. Can you frigging believe that?

"Hippie" or Wilbo" - those were his nicknames back on the corner 35 years ago. I have not seen him in more than 20 years but he was on the local news last night.

Because the other day, he was playing the slots and the machine said he just won $102,000 but they did not pay him!! The casino claimed the machine malfuntioned. Way back when, they would have needed several big bouncers to get Wilbo out of the casino after telling him that.

Btw, Tad Decker, the head of the Pennsylvania is also a C&H alumni. Wonder if Wilbo knows that? Below is the link and I bet Wilbo gets his money.

SOTU Healthcare Proposal Has Unintended (?) Consequences

The healthcare proposal put forth by the president poses some interesting questions.

For instance, government workers generally receive very generous benefit packages. Bush has, perhaps cleverly, put Congress in the uncomfortable position of debating a bill that could require the Congress to reach in their own pockets to pay taxes on their own generous benefits (if the annual cost is in excess of $15,000). I view this as another tool or weapon to add to the "porkbuster" arsenal.

In addition, many union workers receive highly generous benefits. In some cases, these include annuity contributions of $4-5 per hour worked (worth $8-$10,000 to a worker who works a full year). Union influence has been waning, so it is possible the Congress may be placed in a position where it has to consider taxing these overly generous benefits in order to be fair and equitable to Americans who are not members of a union.

Guns Kill & People Do Too

Instapundit (writing about gun control vs. mandatory gun ownership) piqued my interest in an old news clipping I had from 2004. I tend to keep old news clippings planning to share with others.

• Anyway, this clipping stated that 3,588 people were killed by guns from 2001-2003 (3 years) in the state of Pennsylvania.
• 2,112 of them (or 59%) were due to suicide!
• 1,476 of them (or 41%) were due to accidents, assaults, etc.
• I estimate the city of Philadelphia has about 900 gun deaths itself in an average three-year period.
• That means the rest of the state had fewer than 600 gun / firearm deaths in those three years.
• Philly has 1.4 million people and the rest of the state has about 11 million.

From these stats, one could conclude society should spend more money on suicide prevention if it wants to reduce the gun death rate. AND the locale is far more relevant to gun death rates than gun laws.

In other words:

• Guns laws in PA + locale's high crime rate = high gun deaths.
• Guns laws in PA + locale's low crime rate = lower gun deaths.

And it will be interesting to see the far-left libs like Will Bunch of Dopes twist himself into a pretzel when he supports Michael Nutter's proposal to have car-checks for guns. But But But on the other hand, Will Bunch of Dopes would never support Bush's similar efforts to detect terorrists!

Governor Fat Eddie Rendell announced he has 47 initiatives to insure everyone in the state of Pennsylvania. But I can't find them listed anywhere. It's been six days since he announced his sweeping plan which I believe will increase taxes but I support a universal health plan (just could not support anything this governor dreams up).

People Are Leaving Pennsylvania Faster Than All But Five Other States

Pennsylvanians love Governor Fat Eddie and he loved them back by giving everyone healthcare (the middle class will of course pay for it).

Unfortunately (for the governor) news reports indicate there will be fewer state residents to tax to pay for his "new investments" (that's the terminology Democratic governors use because it sounds better than "TAX INCREASE").

Yahoo News (or some such) announced Pennsylvania was ranked 6th highest in net outflow when they compared moving vans departing a state vs. moving vans coming to a state. In Pennsylvania, for every 43 arriving moving vans there were 57 moving vans leaving the state.

Here is the quote from the US News & World Report: " On the outbound trail:

• Michigan tied with North Dakota for the top 66 percent outbound rate,
• followed by New Jersey, 60.9 percent;
• New York, 59.5 percent;
• Indiana, 58.2 percent;
• Pennsylvania, 57.0 percent;
• Louisiana, 56.4 percent and
• Ohio, 55.8 percent. "

So let me get this straight- Pennsylvania could not even beat out Louisiana where I assume many, many people left due to the aftereffects of Hurricane Katrina.

New Jersey Sucks

I knew that when I was a kid. It was just a state we drove thru on the way to the shore. But a new poll of business CFO's found that New Jersey really sucks because its taxes are so high. See the blurb for yourself:

"New Jersey placed second, behind California, in a survey on states with the worst tax climate. The survey, called the CFO State Tax Survey and produced by Boston-based CFO Publishing, asked corporate tax officials for impressions of their states' handling of tax-related issues, including audit fairness and the appeals processes. Of the 5,500 tax directors nationwide who received the survey, nearly 300 responded. This is the fifth state tax survey put out by CFO since 1996. Wanted: A Mayor With Vision

Today, the city of Philadelphia has two full districts in Congress and part of a third. Its population is 1.4 million. The country’s population is 300 million. In 1960, the country had five full districts in Congress and a population of more than 2 million. The country’s population was about 180 million.

If I were running for mayor:

1. My primary vision is to aggressively grow the city’s population by 50% by the year 2020.
2. That would require only a moderate annual increase in Philly's population of about 3%. But it would represent a positive and dramatic turnabout to the steady and large population losses of the last 30-40 years. Which occurred under Democratic mayors, I might add.
3. Once achieved, the city might regain that third full district and perhaps add part of fourth.
4. As mayor, I will target big, bold and broad initiatives to draw people to the city.
5. These could include new ideas like an urban homestead program that rewards residents for staying in Philly and also provides incentives to others to move into the city.
6. Virtually every other city program would be tailored to add positive impetus and synergies to my overriding goal: Bring more people to Philly and keep those we already have happy! (gotta work on this wording- needs to be a bit more snappy & sloganish).
7. This ambitious goal must be accomplished by the time the 2020 census/re-districting begins.
   
   Sounds like a lot of work? Well, it is and it requires a candidate with a grand vision.
   
   And a grand vision is what it will take to get noticed . Especially when I am not part of THE BIG POLITICAL MACHINE (hell, I don't even live in the city).

Say Goodbye To Hollywood

I have been a fan of the TV show "24" for only the last two years. In last night's episode, the terrorists were successful in detonating a suitcase nuke in Los Angeles. It probably killed 100,000 people and the episode depressed me.

First, the terrorists finally struck a huge blow to America and second because I believe this will actually happen one day. We must secure the borders and get a good secure ID program in place. And Americans must stop fighting with each other over every little frigging policy decision.

Everyone knows there are sensible, reasonable and logical steps to keep us safe. Let's stop bickering and get them done. A patient was being taken by ambulance to the hospital and the back door opened and the patient was deposited onto busy Route 295. Talk about double bad luck.

Reminds me of a story about Richie Ashburn. He is a Phillies Hall of Famer and was adept at fouling off pitches and got a lot of walks. He claimed he once hit a fan with foul ball, she was being carrried up the steps out of the stadium and he fouled off another pitch which hit her a second time!
So, I guess you could say lightning can strike twice.

The only "new" thing The Inquirer wanted to hear about President Bush's Iraq plan was that the United States would conduct a complete pullout.

The president talked about holding the Iraqi government responsible for taming the hot spots in Baghdad. He talked of confronting those supplying the insurgents. He also talked about an economic plan to help rebuild Iraq and a revenue-sharing plan from oil profits that benefit Sunnis and Shiites alike, as well as the Kurds.

No, he didn't talk about a diplomatic plan because there's nothing to do diplomatically. The United States is not going to stop pressing Iran to stop its nuclear plans. The Bush administration is not going to give Syria a free pass.

Andy Reid - The Good & The Bad

Reid is well qualified to draft offensive players except perhaps receivers (Freddy Mitchell, UCLA, #1 pick was a flop) and Reid is great at putting together an offensive line.

Reid sucks at putting together D-line and linebackers. Further, under Reid, the team seems to have reached the conclusions that linebackers are not key players in the NFL. I don't think any expert would choose any of the Eagles D-line or linebackers if they were starting a team from scratch. IMHO, none are keepers- get rid of them and get hungry, tough, bigger replacements.

On the whole, Reid has done a mediocre job in 7-8 years. He lucked out with the McNabb selection because the Eagles would have been very lousy without McNabb and no one really knew which QB in that draft would be successful (there were 5-6 choices). So yes I say Reid and the team stepped in shit when they picked McNabb and I don't think McNabb will ever win a Super Bowl (and yes the Eagles now have a QB controversy on their hands- Garcia has played great.) Try as I suspect he did, Reid could not ignore Brian Westbrook in the draft cause Reid lives within a mile of Villanova University and Reid's two boys probably told him how great Westbrook would be on the Eagles.

So, go or stay, the Eagles face a bit of serious re-building on the defense. And may need a QB in 2-3 years too. And have a mediocre coach and GM. That adds up to some more years of no championships for the Eagles.

Immaculate Exception

Editors note: I originally called this the "miraculous" exception when all the while I meant "immaculate" exception to reflect

1. the new minimum wage law being enacted and
2. including the exception of American Samoa
3. but no parents (legislators) stepped forward to take responsibility for inserting the exception.

That is what I am calling the clause in the new minimum wage law that excludes American Samoa. Congress has pledged to be more transparent so we should be able to find out who inserted this "immaculate exception" into the minimum wage law. Some blogs are accusing Speaker Pelosi of protecting a large employer in her district (Star Kist Tuna). We'll see.

"The Wall" Photos Will Be A More Regular Part Of Blog

Just got a new digital camera and plan to post more visuals to this blog. Last year I took a great shot on my phone / camera at the Manayunk Bike Race of the riders rounding Main Street en masse and leaning into and thru the turn as they headed up The Wall. It was an unbelievable shot to see the riders right on top of each other and I was only on the curb just inches away. But I screwed up somehow and lost the shot.

I will get that picture this year (the race is in June) on my new camera and post it here. That s a promise.

Trump Vs. O'Donnell - The Poll Results Are In

Trump vs. O'Donnell- USA Today did a poll. I was surprised Trump trumped Rosie.

Unfavorable Opinion:

• 63% for Rosie! [Stop The Presses -Is This Lower Than Bush?]
• 48% for Trump.

Favorable Opinion:

• 28% for Rosie [ Jeez how the hell did she get hired for a national TV gig?]

I have never been a Trump fan and way back when I heard some very good things about Rosie from some fans who went to see her old TV show. But the poll results surprise me. Rosie's unfavorable of 63% is even worse than the public's stance on gay marriage (about 55-60% are against it). Wonder if that has anything to do with Rosie's blowhard image? Daily Show "We tried a black writer once but it didn't work out"

A black comedian wrote an article in the WAPO today and that is what he says he was told by a writer for The Daily Show.

Will Alligators Migrate to the Delaware River?

I am not much of a believer in global warming and the doomsayers. But it is almost 70 degrees today in Philly. This also occurred in January in the early 1990's cause I remember I took a bike ride on Kelly Drive down to the Art Museum.

But the thought does occur to me that if global warming is really occurring, does that mean alligators will migrate northward and will soon be common in the Delaware River and the Wissahickon Creek.

If so, someone better warn all those kids who dive off the high rocks into the Wissahickon every summer. And if the alligators are not migrating northward, why aren't they? Perhaps I should pose these questions to the all-knowing chicken little, Al Gore (known as Al Bore in my house).

Fox News Ratings Beats All Other Cable Stations

The Inquirer TV writer, Gail Shister, always seems to be writing about the lower rated cable news shows like Larry King or Olberman. If she based the number of stories on the ratings, she'd write more about the Fox News crowd. But she is a lib, so that will never happen. Below are the ratings for Jamuary 4th per Drudge. Note that Chris Mattews is bringing up the rear- it's pretty bad when even Olberman gets more viewers than girly-boy Matthews. Paula Zahn should do her show in a wet T-shirt and cutoffs and her ratings would zoom up. Lastly, scanning this list, I just noticed there is not a single minority on it. That's hard to believe they can get away with that today.

Long Term Impact To Field Of Journalism

The Philadelphia Inquirer reduced its writing workforce by 20% - 71 people will lose their jobs. That is the second round of layoffs in less than 12 months. This type of news has become ordinary throughout the news industry. I believe it will have a long-term affect on the industry and may spur innovations in the web world visa vie bloggers and web version of the daily newspaper. In fact, I view Real Clear Politics as the business model for the newsppaer of the future (lotta opinion and voices). My last word for now is the layoffs must be creating a bunch of bitter employees and career jouralists and will the smaller revenue pie ever affect the high-paid big shots like Couric, Brian Williams, O'Reilley ( who toil in slightly different venues I admit) ?

The Inquirer will focus more on local and regional news, as well as expand its presence online, Devine said. On Tuesday, the company unveiled its Phillycars.com Web site for car listings.

In March, McClatchy Co. became the owner of the Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News as part of its acquisition of Knight Ridder. McClatchy sold the papers three months later to Philadelphia Media Holdings, an investment group led by Brian Tierney, now the papers' chief executive and publisher.

Natalie Pompilio, a reporter who had won national honors for her work, was among those laid off this week. "I feel bad for myself, and I feel really bad for my colleagues who are staying, because I don't know what the current ownership considers journalism," she said as she drove home yesterday with her belongings. "I'm just kind of shocked, the way the whole thing went down. I thought I'd done a lot of good work for the paper."

Just finished my first book of 2007. It is the story of Hannibal Lechter's youth, a prequel if you will to the two other books, The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal.

Wonder What Saddam Is Thinking?

• As a member of the National Motorists Association, www.motorists.org, I am concerned about the tone and direction of the discussions on getting more money for highways. Privatization is a splendid idea - for new roads and new lane capacity. But Rendell & Co. want to sell existing highways. Would the Turnpike Commission disappear? My feeling is that the private owners and government entities would exist in parallel, doubly punishing motorists financially.
• If you think a private owner of the Pennsylvania Turnpike (monopoly) is a terrific solution, think Comcast. Add to that the fact that "smart growth" planners actually want more traffic congestion, in the mistaken belief that it will force people onto transit, and it is predictable that we will be stuck with current road capacity and higher taxes.
• Value pricing of roads, similar to off-peak prices for phone calls, is a good idea. For instance, with an extra charge at rush hour, congestion would be significantly alleviated; people would do errands at cheaper times. However, the universal GPS technology needed to do this is years away.
• For new roads, go ahead and privatize. Value pricing and competition will determine success or failure. For existing roads, stop spending gas-tax money on failing mass transit, bike paths and "greenways." Spend road taxes on roads.

Ralph Peters Should Be Running The War in Iraq

Whenever I read Ralph Peters' opeds in the NY Post, I ask why Peters isn't running the war in Iraq. He is a former military officer, author and damed fine columnist. Here is what he said today about the Iraq war:

“One thing's clear: If we can't enforce security, nothing else matters. So the wisest course of action seems obvious - except to the Washington establishment: Return to a wartime footing. Focus exclusively on security. Concentrate on doing one thing well. Freeze all reconstruction and aid projects. Halt every program and close every office that doesn't contribute directly to pacifying Iraq. Empty the Green Zone. Pack off the contractors. Reduce the military's overhead to those elements essential to support combat operations. Make it clear to "our" Iraqis that it's sink-or-swim time. Remove our advisers from any Iraqi unit that can operate marginally without them (and let the Iraqis do security their way without interference).
Above all, establish unity of command: Stop pretending there's a fully functional government in Baghdad, recall our ambassador until the fighting's over and make this a purely military effort until Iraq has been pacified. “

Interesting story on Drudge today about the first island to be submerged by rising seas due to the dreaded global warming. I googled the name of the island, Lochachara, and found a story that indicates the island was actually submerged 22 years ago. Go figure? I wonder which is correct?

Thank God I don't have Times Select cause then I'd be tempted to read this crap from their ilk like Paul Krugman (see his OPED title and the lede). So it appears the liberal pundits will now admit that deficits don't matter when Dems hold the majority? Protect The Turtles (and maybe Americans too)

The Galapagos Islands is a fast-growing tourist destination because it has giant turtles and stuff. As a result, the resident population has grown from 8,000 to 30,000 and the tree-huggers are concerned the island's delicate eco-system will be damaged by the added residents and the tourists. In an effort to restrict the growth in the resident population, the island is issuing mandatory ID cards!! Here is a quote from the news story in the Seattle PI newspaper.

"Local officials acknowledge that enforcement of the (immigration) rules is problematic. But a special government census, which collected data recently, is one of several ways officials are trying to get a better handle on growth…..About three months ago, they also began issuing residents mandatory identity cards that feature photos, invisible ultraviolet ink, a computer bar code and a holographic overlay."

I think that is great news!! Perhaps, when they get their ID system perfected, the good old USA can adopt it and use it here in America to help track illegal immigrants and potential terrorists. Afterall, if it's good enough for the turtles on the Galapagos Islands, it should be good enough for Americans. Why don't we all check with our local Congressman and see what he thinks?

Congressman Jefferson of Louisiana has won his runoff election against a Democrat challenger who ran on the platform that essentially " Jefferson had $90,000 in cold cash in his fridge and was probably corrupt". This Is Perfect Don't You Think?

I Will Miss Boondocks

My favorite comic strip is Boondocks. I just heard the writer is going on indefinite hiatus. Damn that sucks- I am gonna miss my daily fix. That's just one less reason for me to buy a daily newspaper.

For years, I read almost every comic strip in the daily newspaper. In the last few years, I cut down to a select few. Those are: Doonesbury written by that liberal wheenie with a French name, Dilbert, Hal Foster's Prince Valiant (Sundays only), and The Piranha Club. I may have to read Get Fuzzy the strip that replaced Boondocks. Was not too bad this morning- probably an acquired taste- I will give it a chance.

This Had To Hurt

A bridge falls onto a train passing below. That had to frigging hurt.

The AP writer uses the phrase "colonial-era bridge" as if that is some kind of universal date stamp throughout the world. In America, the phrase could refer to 300-400 years ago. Who the frig knows what it is in India (though later in the story, it says 150 years ago). And I am just saying, you know!

What I Think

This is a copy of a comment I posted yesterday on another blog in response to another commenter (named Mackan) who claimed America was already a theocracy, it did not takle care of the poor and felt that Bush's tax cuts were intellectually bankrupt. I liked what I posted so much, I figured I'd post it here on my own blog for posterity. Here it is:

1. I am a republican (fallen catholic) and don't have any fears that we are about to become a theocracy (where is your overriding evidence??).
2. I believe the govt does provide substantial benefit programs to the poor (I wish more of the programs were direct cash benefits to the needy and not administered thru big, fat bureacracies).
3. I estimate fewer than 12-15 million CITIZENS can not afford or don't get health insurance at work. And it is a fact that a good percentage of those just elect to spend their money on something else besides health insurance premiums. The media uses 44 million as its uninsured but that number includes a significant number (approximately 15-25 million) of illegal immigrants and legal immigrants who are not yet citizens.
4. I believe the tax cuts were largely responsible for turning the economy around after 911 and the deficit is getting smaller and smaller (and generally deficits are less important or announced when Dems are in the majority). I also don't believe tax cuts "per se" can be intelletually bankrupt and if the govt is so worthy of more of our money, how much have you donated freely to it Mackan? I don't need a precise amount, an estimate will do.
5. I don't believe there is much we can do about global warming (if it truly occurring) so I don't support the various chicken little's running around.
6. I think social security must be fixed and it is an especially egregious disgrace if you are 25 years old and must look forward to paying in about $350,000 over the next 40 years and you are also expected to fund other retirement vehicles like an IRA because your social security benefit will be miniscule vs. what you paid in. And the party that taps this curently-dormant but enormous pool of currently screwed and eligible-age voters will reign for years!.
7. I am for term limits, reducing the size of government and encouraging every state to contribute a fixed amount per student to every school district (I believe the right amount is about $5,000).
8. I supported the Iraq War because our govt believed we were at risk to be struck by WMD because evidence said Iraq had WMD and Saddam was a no good evil son of a bitch. I am very disappointed and saddened that the war has been so deadly and costly to our troops and their families. But I recognize wars are by nature highly unpredictable and we are dealing with a very treacherous group of people in Iraq.
9. I am against voters having the option of voting the straight party ticket by pulling one lever in the polling booth. Let each and very candidate earn your vote- does the constitution state we should make it easier for major party candidates to get votes?
10. I am in favor of being given a choice to vote for "none of the above" when I vote. We should strive to reduce the power and influence of all political parties (not one or the other) and we should be more eager to battle for ideas and dreams about which we feel strongly.
11. I would encourage govt to enact regulations so that pensions for govt workers/ politicians are far less generous than those earned by our military or law enforcement officials.
12. I am in favor of school choice and giving public schools the ability to kick out of school for one year any unruly students (let their parents or social workers take over). It's not the school's job.

That is what I am for and believe in, and for now, that means I usually vote republican. And FYI- I voted for Carter/ Mondale/ Dukakis/ another Dem / and Clinton (only in 1992). I may have them in the wrong order.

Dems Have Already Started Raking In Lobbyist's Moolah

Here is a quote from the WAPO tomorrow about how the DC lobbying crowd is simply switching teams from the republicans to the democrats. Read this quote from the story and see what I mean:

43rd Anniversary .......

.....of the assassination of John F. Kennedy on 11/22/1963. Damn I remember that day almost like it was yesterday. It was about 130PM EST and a group of us was leaving the Church and headed next door to the classrooms when a lady across the street ran out of her house with the news that "Kennedy was shot". It was broadcast over the school intercom and I remember our sixth-grade teacher, Miss Martino, standing in front of the class with tears in her eyes.

Kennedy was a hero to many in our neighborhood because he was the first (and still is the only) Catholic to be elected as president. I remember thousands turning out when he campaigned in a motorcade down the next street over from us (Castor Avenue in northeast Philadelphia). Only in Philadelphia, would a candidate for Mayor and current U.S. Congressman (Chaka Fattah), announce his candidacy for mayor outside a new state of the art high school because he feels he has a special focus and zeal for education issues. BUT and you knew that was coming, incredibly Fattah, himself, is a HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUT. Jeez, he never even got a GED. But somehow he has received a masters degree from Penn even though he never ever attended undergraduate college and does not have an undergraduate degree. What A Typical, Liberal, Kumbaya, MSM Columnist Duestchbag

John Grogan writes a column for the Philadelphia Inquirer in its metro section. Like most good (I mean typical) liberal, kumbaya, MSM columnists, Grogan regularly drifts into national politics topics even though his assigned beat is what they call the "metropolitan" section.

Here is the link to his column yesterday where Grogan calls for Bush to create a "New Energy" commission in charge of finding alternative energy course and Grogan wants Bush to put Al Gore in charge. Now keep in mind, Gore has been quoted as saying Bush has betrayed our country as to the Iraq war.

Grogan is dumb, stupid and lame to even dream up crap like this and then put it in a column. And yes, I realize the column was Grogan's poorly constructed idea of a dream sequence. And yes Grogan is the newly wealthy author of the dog book called "Marley & Me". IMHO, he is just a liberal, wuss deutshbag. And a perfect example why the MSM is failing and its circulation is dropping.

We now have pictures produced by cameras

As you may have noticed, I have just learned how to post pictures to blogger. So you got three straight pictures from my disposable camera film that I just got developed. I tend to buy them before a trip, use a few frames, file the camera away then repeat the process a few times over the next 12-18 months. That's why it takes me so long to use up one camera- I end up with 4-5 cameras each with about 15 pictures left on the roll. So, the pictures I just got developed included a trip to Tahoe in 2004, my trip to Phoenix in 2005 and some shots of my office taken in the summer.

Hence the post title..."we now have pictures produced by those things known as cameras". As I typed that title, I was remdined me of an old bar in North Wildwood, New Jersey. It was named Bishops High Tops or High Steps and it was said to be one of the oldest liquor licenses in the town and had been owned for about 50 years by an oldtimer named Bishop. He was slow to adapt to changes or trends but one time in the early 1980's after he had actually re-modelled his taproom, he proudly posted a new sign on one wall inside his establishment. The sign read "We Now Have Vodka and Orange juice".

Taxes are going up but Governor Rendell got a pass by putting the announcement off until AFTER LAST WEEK'S ELECTION! FYI- the governor has increased total state spending by 40% in less than 4 years in office (that's an average of 10% per year). Has you paycheck increased by 40% since Fast Eddie took office as governor in 2003? Future Of Polling

At some point, polling methods will have to adapt to the changes in technology and lifestyles. Let's face it, a lot of people don't have landline phone service at home and many others don't answer home phones unless (1) they know who is calling and (2) they feel like talking.

That means it's very likely that polls (at some time in the future if not already) will tend to over-sample people who still rely primarily on a landline and still answer their phone on a regular basis (I suspect that is mostly elderly folks).

So, I wonder when the prototypical polling methods will finally go over the cliff in terms of reliability and accuracy? Perhaps, it is already occurring.

Election Predictions

Senate (from north to south then westward):

• Whitehouse by 4%
• Medendez by 5%
• Casey by 8%
• Upset special- Steele by 1%
• Webb by 1%
• Corker by 5%
• Talent sqeaks by less than 1% (despite Dem hankypanky in St. Louis)
• Tester by 2%.
• These results, I believe, will put the Dems in control of the senate
• And I can't wait to see the fireworks set off by Webb in the Senate. He will certainly make things interesting as he is the one who said there are too many pussies in the Dem party and I agree.

Area House Results:

• Weldon loses (my district) by only 1%
• Fitzpatrick beats Murphy by 6%
• Gerlach wins by 4% (surprisingly easy but voters just didn't warm up to Lois Murphy who strikes many people as someone with negligible experience but runs as if it's her turn to win). Thank God on this one- cause Murphy and her supporters are the ones who are spending $20,000 per student in the Lower Merion school district. That is tyranny by the majority IMHO.

Due to the latest flack over John Kerry's dumb comment, I stumbled onto this old Boston Globe story comparing Kerry's college grades to Bush's. Bush actually had a 78 everage in his 4 years at Yale and the oh so smart Kerry only got a 77. And Kerry got 4 D's" in his freshman year when he took ten classes.

Christ even I did better than Kerry and it took me seven years to graduate (went to 3 colleges).

A Waffle House Vignette

Gotta tell you The Waffle House is one of my favorite restaurants to help me keep the cholosterol up where it should be. You can't beat it for a quick bacon and eg sandwich and some home fries. Well, today, I was driving back from West Virginia and I had to stop at one enroute thru Maryland (the chain doesn't have any in the Pennsylvania area near me).

Anyhoo, I ordered my usual and was reading The New Years Times that someone had kindly left behind (how odd is that The Waffle House and The New York Times)- you'd never catch one of their elitist girly-men writers in a Waffle House. But I digress, an ancient couple is eating in the booth next to me, they finish their meal and leave. A few minutes later, the husband comes back in and is looking for something. I offered to help, he says his wife left her rain scarf behind. We can't spot it, I mention to their waitress and she says the wife had it around her neck when she left! After he left, I warned the waitress that is what she had to look forward to!

How Does The NYT Know Which One Was The Husband?

A former congressman died today and the NY Times write-up referred to the surviving spouse (it was a gay marriage) as the husband.

What is up with that? How does the NY Times know which one was the husband or were they both husbands cause they were both men or is it cause he was the one who signed in the "husband" space on the marriage license? Find out and get back to me cause I am very curious as to why the NYT used that word. Perhaps it is this week's newest mandatory PC term as promulgated by the National Board Of Wheeny News Idiotors ? Methinks they used up at least four hours deciding "husband" was the proper word.

Mark Warner Opts Out Of Politics- Says Nutoots Bloggers Eat Too Much

Mark Warner has decided he won't run for the presidency in 2008. He claimed he wanted to spend more time with his family but privately he complained to close aides that he, a mega-millionaire, could not afford to feed the fatass nutroots crowd again. Last year at the Yearly Kos convention in Vegas, Warner footed the tab for a feast for the nutroots circle jerk. Warner said he could not believe how fat the average nutroots blogger is. Warner guesses they got so hefty from sitting all day in front of a computer, eating from giant buckets of granola and posting every whiny thought that enters their tiny crazed minds. Geez, Warner exclaimed, why don't they walk around the block once in a while or go to a library where they could actually read something worthwhile instead of copying post from each other's blogs. Warner wondered aloud if even one of the nutroots had ever had an original idea.

FYI- I am watching the Boston College - Virginia Tech Thursday night game nationally televised on ESPN. And I caught this kicker's debut. The announcers mentioned that just last year he was simply another student fan watching the game with a painted face.

I Don't Think I Trust Bonnie Grant To Be An Expert On Structural Safety Issues

An exit ramp at the new Philadelphia Eagles stadium was swaying enough after Sunday's game that a bunch of attendees called the Eagles to report it.
